Dear Faith Community - I am coming to you with a message concerning stolen autos by way of warm-ups or what we call jump-ins. As we approach the colder temperatures we have a higher number of citizens who choose to have the their vehicle running unattended in their driveways, in front of convenience stores and restaurants to keep it warm. It only takes a thief approximately 30 seconds to steal a vehicle that is unlocked and running. It takes approximately 2 minutes if a thief breaks the glass to enter a locked vehicle that is left running. Every 43 seconds, a car is stolen in the United States, which is close to a million vehicles per year. When these types of thefts occur it is costly to the victim and can drive up the cost of their car insurance. Please never leave your car running unattended - locked or unlocked! Sincerely - The Prince George’s County Police Department
